Lori McLean creates handmade, sterling silver jewelry using colored resins and pearls. Her Manhattan studio is papered with images and clippings that inspire her unique and beautiful designs. Current inspirations include sea shells, blown glass, subway mosaics, cubist paintings, kimono cloth, and Persian textiles.
After she received her BFA in silk-screen printing from the University of Colorado in Boulder, McLean moved to San Francisco where after a gloomy stint at office work, she set herself on a path towards self employment that led her to metalsmithing and jewelry design.
McLean's printmaking past is reflected in her work. Smooth
planes of translucent resin are placed on a gleaming sterling
silver base to create luminescent patterns. When designing,
her goal is to create something special that will become
part of the wearer's celebrations, as well as their
everyday lives. A successful piece, in McLean's view,
possesses a quiet strength through the fusion of brilliant
color and rhythmic patterning, a concept that is distinctive
in her work.
