Trained as an artist, Sandy Chilewich has a passion
for creating new uses for textiles. Chilewich was the co-founder
of the successful company, HUE Legwear. HUE is credited
with revolutionizing the leg wear industry with their innovative
design and merchandising. Chilewich and her partner ran
the company for 14 years before selling it in 1992.
Adapting her knowledge of textiles and fashion to the
home decor industry, Chilewich opened her New York City
based design studio in 1996. RayBowls™, her first
effort, were introduced in November of 1997, and were met
with instant success. RayBowls™ have a simple and
inventive mechanism for making fabric concave and have
won Chilewich many patents and awards. These containers
are designed to hold the things in life—paper clips,
keys, pencils, jewelry, stones or mints.
Never one to rest on her laurels, Chilewich has reinterpreted
woven vinyl textiles for unusually durable tablemats.
The modern alternative to tabletop dressing, these woven
vinyl placemats are available in an array of textures
and colors from the warm feel of bark to the cool look
of steel. The material is beautiful, durable and washable.
In keeping with her passion for taking textiles out of
context, Chilewich designs totes, zips and travel accessories
with the same woven vinyl. The silhouettes are simple and
utilitarian, focusing on their intricate and lovely weaves.
Always inventive, never ordinary: Sandy Chilewich is always
a step ahead of the mainstream.
