 Moleskine Books

Moleskine Books

The legendary notebook of European artists and intellectuals, such as Van Gogh and Matisse, members of the Parisian avant-garde, and our own Ernest Hemingway, is now available, in five exciting formats.

This simple small black rectangular notebook (just 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches) with end leaves held by an elastic band, an inside pocket for loose sheets, and a binding in “moleskin,” which gives it its name, has been, since the turn of the last century, a trusty pocket-sized traveling companion, guarding notes, stories, thoughts, and artist’s sketches before they were turned into beloved books and formidable paintings.

Writer-traveler Bruce Chatwin bought his Moleskine at a Paris stationery shop in Rue de l’Ancienne Comédie. He always stocked up before going off on one of his famous journeys. Before he wrote a note, he numbered all of the pages, wrote in his name and at least two addresses, and the promise of a reward in case of loss. "Losing my passport was the least of my worries, losing a notebook was a catastrophe". In 1986, the last producer of these special notebooks, a small family concern in Tours, closed down. Chatwin, who had ordered one hundred before leaving for Australia, bought up all he could find.

After an absence of more than a dozen years, this wonderful little notebook is being produced again, now in Milan, Italy. Moleskine has returned to bear witness to the world, passing from pocket to pocket, and going where electronics dare not tread.
